How ready are you really?

For many of us, we want change - and almost everyone wants it right now. Often, once we feel that itch that something isn’t quite right, we want to be in a different place in our lives.

Yet, change can often feel elusive, and arduous - no matter how much we may want it! We so often beat ourselves up for not making change, despite yelling into the ether, “Why can’t I just…I am sick and tired of this!” Although this stalemate does not make logical sense, I mean why wouldn’t we do what we know is “good” for us? It might make emotional sense.

You may be ready, and willing - but not yet able. You may be able and willing - but not ready. You may not be any of the three at all! To begin truly making actionable change, you have to be in full alignment of all three: Ready, willing, and able. Forcing yourself to be any of the three will cause you to be out of alignment and possibly not capable of what it takes to make true change. This is where the uncomfortability of it all can stem from.

So - let’s take a look at the Stages of Change. Decide for yourself how where on the path you are - and if you just need a bit more time to be honest with yourself.

  1. Pre-contemplation - “What needs to change?” -  Not aware yet of bad habits, or that anything needs to change. Currently lacking insight into how certain behaviors effect them

  2. Contemplation - “I need change, I’m not sure exactly what or how” - Awareness and acknowledgement that something needs to change. Not yet sure if it’s worth it, or exactly where to start.

  3. Preparation - “Let’s see if I can’t figure this out” - Information gathering to begin solving the problem of HOW to make change to the behavior that they have become aware of.

  4. Action - “Let’s do this” - The beginning stages of choosing different behavior from that which doesn’t align with our value system. Often considered to be a stage marked by less than 6 months of change.

  5. Maintenance - “I really can do this” - Taking different action for more than 6 months since starting. For many, almost eliminating old patterns of behavior. As with all things, this isn’t linear. You can make it into action, stumble, learn more in preparation, take action again, go back to contemplation when you need to take another step and so on. Sometimes we can make solid change for years and relapse back to pre-contemplation. We are human! But what is important is to be honest with yourself where you are. If you’re in the contemplation stage, that’s okay! Don’t beat yourself up or “should” all over yourself for not being in maintenance yet. Accept where you are now, and moving forward will become much easier! Your Invitation
